Advocating for Stolen Generations Survivors
How can advocacy help amplify the voices of Stolen Generations survivors?
The problem:
The Bringing Them Home Report (1997), the landmark national inquiry into the Stolen Generations, made 54 recommendations to support healing and reconciliation. While progress has been made in some areas, many recommendations remain unimplemented.
Our research:
- We conducted research for The Healing Foundation, producing a Discussion Paper on the unfinished business of the Bringing Them Home Report.
- Our work involved documentary research to create a timeline since 1997, summarise key themes, and identify recommendations most relevant to The Healing Foundation and Stolen Generations organisations.
- Our analysis found that only around 20 per cent of the recommendations have been adopted, with survivors facing unequal access to reparations depending on state and territory.
Our impact:
- Our research set out 15 practical suggestions for policy, advocacy, and communication, providing governments and other stakeholders with concrete actions to improve the lives of Stolen Generations survivors.
- The Healing Foundation highlighted the value of this work in supporting justice and healing, and our findings also informed a national Sorry Day Policy Forum in May 2024.
Our research will be used to provide advice to governments and other responsible parties to improve the lives of Stolen Generations survivors.
